SENSES Foundation of WA has released a DVD to assist people who have a friend or family member that suffers from acquired deafblindness.
Dual sensory loss affects about 6000 people in WA over the age of 65, which can leave suffers feeling isolated and unable to communicate.
The DVD and booklet package offers advice and guidance about the causes of deafblindness and practical ways to support sufferers.
Senses Community Services manager Richard Long said the DVD was a useful tool for aged care workers, healthcare providers, family and friends.
He said measures that people could take to make life easier for sufferers included approaching them from the front, speaking clearly and slowly, creating a well-lit environment and keeping things in the same place. The package, titled You and Me – Keeping In Touch can be ordered at www.senses.asn.au or 9473 5400.
