WESTERN Australia has won Division 1 of the 2009 AFL Under-18s Football Championships, going through the competition undefeated after beating Victoria Country by 48 points in their final game.
It is WA’s second title in five years with several members of the team likely to be drafted into the AFL at the end of the year.
Travis Colyer, Brad Sheppard, Mitchell Duncan, Mark Hutchings and Nicholas Winmar are the most likely prospects to find an AFL home.
WA player David Swallow and Vic Country’s Andrew Hooper shared the Larke Medal as the fairest and best players at the championships.
Swallow, who is too young to be drafted this year, is almost certain to be targeted by the new Gold Coast AFL team in 2010.
Anthony Morabito, who has been playing league football at Peel Thunder this season, was named WA’s best player over his team’s five games.
In their final match yesterday, Jack Darling kicked three goals for WA in their 16.14 (110) to 9.8 (62) win over Vic Country.
Colyer had 23 touches to be best-on-ground.
