PERTH Broncos are celebrating their club’s first gridiron title after their junior team powered to victory in Saturday’s Gridiron West junior grand final.
Victory was never in doubt for the Ashfield-based club from the time Brandt Honda opened the scoring with a dazzling run on a punt return.
Running back Tom Pisk scored twice and Ben Houston, a former Australian representative, returned an interception the length of the field as the Broncos ran out 30-8 winners.
Honda, also the team’s quarterback, threw some nice passes and was named the game’s most valuable player.
Head coach Lane Honda praised his team’s defensive players for containing the Steelers’ high-powered offence.
The Steelers’ only touchdown came in the final minute of the game on a long pass from quarterback Adam Rooney to wide receiver Kenneth Tran.
“Our defence prepared very well,” Lane Honda said.
“But the key was that we had a squad of 21 boys committed to playing, which allowed us to have separate offensive and defensive teams.”
The junior Broncos’ success came on the back of a season where they lost only two games and finished on top of the ladder. Their senior team finished the season in fourth position.
