FORMER Helena Valley resident Carey Guetano has given up her life in Australia and moved almost 9000km away to volunteer at a Tanzanian school.

Ms Guetano was working as a senior tax consultant before she decided to volunteer in an accounts receivable role at The School of St Jude.

The 25-year-old has been there since January this year and she said the decision was easy to make.

“I visited Africa for the first time in 2009 on an organised tour with my best friend,” she said.

“After the trip I knew that I really wanted to return to do some volunteer work.”

While researching, Ms Guetano discovered St Jude’s through a radio station website.

“From there, I found that they were looking for volunteers in a field where I could provide support,” Ms Guetano said.

“I love that everyday living in Tanzania gives me an opportunity to learn new things, not just about the culture but also about myself.”

The School of St Jude employs more than 330 local Tanzanians including headmasters and academic staff who, in a short time, have established St Jude as the 21st ranking school in the entire country.
