GREED. It’s a lousy word but it is dominates our way of life.
In one way, it is great to see people copping heavy fines for taking under-sized crabs but on the other hand, it is sad and frustrating to think people do it.
When you add up, mentally, the grand total of under-sized crabs taken it’s not good.
This year has not been a good one overall for our blue manna crabs and even catching 20 has at times been difficult.
It’s annoying when you read about greedy people doing what they have done and you are out there putting them back in the water about an eighth of an inch undersize.
Dobbing someone in has always been frowned upon in Australia.
However, we have to change if we want our fish and crabs to be around in years to come.
It’s true as our population increases and Cockburn remains closed, Mandurah blue mannas will be hit harder.
Be vigilant, forget old habits and traditions and report to fisheries offices people who have little or no respect for our fish and crabs.
It’s no big secret that we are not overloaded in Mandurah with fishery officers. It’s up to us to assist these officers as their job is absolutely huge, like the area they have to cover.
